Tuesday, 20 June

The firing pressure inside each cylinder on the main engine is just about 120 Bar, or 1,752 PSI.  This is the pressure caused by the combustion of the fuel inside, and is what forces the piston downward in the power stroke of the cycle.

Question:

I understand normal ship diesels are 2-stroke; is yours?

Answer:

No.  You are right that the higher horsepower propulsion diesels are 2-stroke but many, many marine diesels are 4-stroke and as Diesel-Electric propulsion is becoming more popular you will find more and more 4-stroke medium speed diesels for power plants in ships.
