Random Ship Facts   (Courtesy of 3rd Engineer Phil Lessard)

Friday, 16 June

We have three large sea water system sea chests, located in the forward end of the lower engine room.  Two of them are situated low on the hull on both the port and starboard sides.  The other sea chest is higher and located on the starboard side.  The reason for having a high sea chest is to allow the pumps to pull in water relatively free from bottom muck while in port, while the two lower sea chests are used at sea, where wave action could potentially uncover a high sea chest.

Question:

Are ships designed to operate anywhere?

Answer:

Mostly yes, but ships on certain runs with in certain areas are normally fitted out with special gear or equipment that best suits the area of operation.  For instance in the "fact" above.  Most all ships would have a steam line going to the sea chest so that if they operated in an area of ice where the sea chest could possibly plug up with ice they would turn on the steam to keep the sea chest free of ice.  You could also turn on the steam to kill any marine growth in the sea chest to prevent fouling should that become a problem.
