At Castine, Maine

Monday,  26 June  Day 60  Daily Log   Voyage #  0906

FINAL

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Castine this morning was overcast and RAINY....the way it has been since we left!

(At least that's what we have been told)

Final day of Training Cruise 2006 is here.  Preparations are being made to offload all gear, clean the ship and transition everyone ashore.  It was busy last night as those on liberty took advantage of the time to move stuff off the ship.

So....RAIN, this morning makes for a miserable offload but thanks to the MMA Waterfront staff the Boat Bay at Payson was made available to stage the offloaded gear.  This at least helps keep things dry until the final muster and room inspections take place.  Quite a few extra cars here this morning to pick up students.

Cruise has been great this year.  Intense at times, but a super learning experience.  The port calls were terrific and everyone had a good time.  We will transition to Summer Maintenance this week and again the week after the fourth.  Then we look forward to a new class of MUGS in late August.

We need to thanks all who worked behind the scenes to make this a successful experience for all of us. MMA Staff, Public Works, Waterfront, Purchasing, Finance (who pay our bills in all those odd currencies), Public Relations, Tug support from PENTAGOET both leaving and arriving  MARAD SAR and Washington, Agents and host Maritime Academies' in the ports we visited and M-PACT for their initial Security training effort that turned out so well..  We also owe our Alumni a hearty well done for all the effort they put into supporting us and our voyage and port visits.  I would also like to personally THANK the crew, staff, faculty and Dining Services for the great job they did which was key to making this cruise the success it was.  THANK YOU ALL!

NOW.....lets look at NEXT year:

Portland Info:

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.

UPDATE

6/25/06 Sunday  4:29 PM

We saw on the Internet that the TSSOM was all safely back in her berth and another successful cruise under their belt, Bravo Zulu. We got underway from Lunenburg at 1700 Sunday and are cleared to Maine. We plan a fishing stop on the Banks and then off to Maine .Lunenburg was a great port call and everyone enjoyed this city so closely tied to the sea and sail.

We expect to be in Bar Harbor Wednesday and will cruise the Penobscot Bay for a couple days and return to Castine at 1100 on Friday.

Best, John

6/26/06  9:04 AM  Monday

We are currently at Roseway bank, 18nm from Cape Sable slowly ghosting our way around the Cape towards MDI. Weather is foggy but all are enjoying calm seas and light air making our homeward passage. We will be turning our clocks back to Eastern time tonight. Still looking for the elusive sun. I think many have been getting "fogburns".

Best, John
