Portland to Castine, Maine

Saturday,  24 June  Day 59  Daily Log   Voyage #  0906

CAPTAIN'S LOG

The FINAL Leg of Training Cruise 2006 is underway.  We left Portland this morning right on time at 1000 hours.  We proceeded away from the Maine State Pier with the assistance of Captain Brian Fournier and two McAllister tugs.  Captain Susan Clark then took over and piloted us out of the harbor.

Our guests for the Excursion to Castine started arriving about 0800 and we now have 443 persons on board.  We departed Portland at 1100 hours and are scheduled to arrive at Buoy 14M off Monhegan at 1400.  Castine berthing should be at  the slack water just before 1800.

Portland was great with many visits from family and friends.  The city shows growth every time we visit.  The latest being the new Ocean-gate Cruise terminal under construction.  The downtown area hosts a great mix of shops, pubs, restaurants and culture.  All in all ONE GREAT VISIT....THANK YOU PORTLAND and all our supporters who made the visit possible for us.

One last note...as we left the dock this morning we had a call from "Dad's Dream" which indicated that the power had been restored to the radio.  Captain Bob Dwyer wished us all a happy and safe voyage home to Castine and we, of course, wished him the same returning to Halifax.  He wished to THANK all of the embarked personnel for their help.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

Portland Info:

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
