CAPTAIN'S LOG

A happy ending!

Dad's Dream as we found her.

Myself and Mr. Dwyer as he started work on cleaning up.

I am very happy to report that "Dad's Dream" was formally released to her owner this morning at quarters, with the Cadet Master handing over the papers.  We also presented him with Cruise 2006 hats and mugs.  We now have some more details on the saga of Dad's Dream.

As we suspected they were involved with Hurricane Alberto during the passage North to Halifax.  The unexpected strengthening of Alberto actually caused the boat to suffer at least two "knock-downs" (turned over till the mast was in the water) while they were aboard.  Bob's wife Beverly was thrown across the cabin and suffered a cut that required 16 stitches and a cracked vertebrae.  Fearing more knock downs and some worry about his wife's condition the decision was made to abandon.  Coast Guard RCC Norfolk executed the rescue by helicopter, with rescue swimmers.  High praise is due the Coast Guard for their professionalism.  Bob's wife who is a nurse commended the paramedics on the Helo.

They next tried to find the boat with a chartered vessel but when they got close to us the weather had deteriorated to the point that they returned to Halifax.  Finally they (Bob and son Gord) drove to Portland where we were finalizing the paperwork and obtaining clearance from Customs to turn the boat back to them, which happened this morning.  The assembled cadets at morning quarters gave a round of applause when the papers were handed to Mr. Dwyer.  A true happy ending for all.

The "FLAT" story:                         Another day in the Engine Room

I think Stella likes the Engine room better than Stanley!

Portland Info:

BERTH:  Maine State Pier, East Side

SAILING 1000 Tomorrow 24th.

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.

UPDATE

6/23/06  5:57 AM

Bowdoin is crossing Halifax Traffic in SW wind15 kts and foggy. We had some nice sun yesterday and expect the fog to lift later as we arrive in Lunenburg, ETA 1400. We have arranged to tie up to the Fisheries Museum and we are all looking forward to this port call. Picton Castle has just returned from a world passage and visiting her should be interesting.

Please advise Capt. Wade that I will discontinue listening on HF. I am sure that our system is not installed properly and will make these repairs upon our return. I send my regards and hope his final leg of the trip goes well. Best, John Worth
