At Portland, Maine

Thursday,  22 June  Day 57  Daily Log   Voyage #  0806

CAPTAIN'S LOG

T.S. STATE OF MAINE @ Maine State Pier, Portland

Just a few words about Alumni and Alumni support of our cruises.  When we operate on cruise our costs are always a consideration in planning our ports and finding innovative ways to fund the costs.  Over the years it has been the Alumni of Maine Maritime Academy  who have stepped forward time and again to offer donations, services and have contacted friends to help support our port calls.  As Portland is the closest port for us, over the years the training ship has called here many, many times.  We are always welcomed, we always have great support in Portland and we always revel in the Alumni visits we have here.  The camaraderie of Alumni in a one on one situation increases exponentially when you put a bunch of them together.  In fact, there is so much laughter and fun, that other people in the vicinity may not know quite how to interpret just what is going on!  That is especially so, when the older Alums start talking about "Hanging around", "Finning Out", "One Hands" and all the Middies' fun and games of the old days.

Portland has been wonderful this year and to date everyone has been super in supporting us and also supporting our effort to get "Dad's Dream" safely into port and prepare for turning her back over to the family that was evacuated from her after the Hurricane Alberto knock downs.  Just consider the logistics and support:  Pilots, Docking Masters, Tugs, Line Handlers, Port Officials and staff, Agents, Customs & Border Protection, Coast Guard, Berths, Dumpsters for trash and the myriad other details of a port call.  This is a huge level of support for us and we certainly appreciate all the help and support.

THANK YOU PORTLAND,     THANK YOU ALUMNI.....without your help we could not make it happen.

Portland Info:

BERTH:  Maine State Pier, East Side

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
