| CAPTAIN'S LOG

Portland this morning...Great day!
Certainly a busy morning. We transferred
our tow to an MMA 02 grad for entering Portland. After that we
motored over to a clear area and tested both anchors as part of our
MarAd sea trial. That completed, we proceeded to test the
steering with both steering engines. Finally we did
ahead and astern tests and actually ran the ship astern at 6.5
knots.
Next we picked up the bar pilot Captain Mike
Siepert MMA 85 for transit into the harbor where he was relieved by
the docking master Captain Bill Gribbin MMA 61, an upperclassman
when I was a cadet. Alongside the dock we were greeted by the staff
from the City of Portland Marine Department and the staff from Chase
Leavitt Steamship agents. They escorted the Customs and Border
Protection personnel aboard to clear the ship. As I write this
we are accomplishing a few housekeeping chores in readiness for
families and friends boarding the vessel.

Captain Gribbin MMA 61
It is really nice to be in Portland again.
The last time was 4 years ago. We look forward to an
enjoyable, though somewhat hectic, stay.

MAINE, the way life should be!

Transfer the tow. You just don't see this kind of
picture anywhere else in the World.

Portland/Castine
Excursion:
Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our
home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".
The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons
on board above our vessels certification. To do this we have
to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.
Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited. We,
of necessity, have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper
class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus
official MMA invitees and crew member guests. We can not offer
more because we do not have the lifesaving capability. Also
this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather,
security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the
last moment. The security issue is becoming a big item in how
we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning
to attend please be patient with the necessary
procedures. |

UPDATE

We are in
St.Peters this morning and will be getting underway at 0800 when the
St. Peters lock tenders open for business.
The
weather is gray with 15-25 kt SW wind. We are getting the schooner
ready for several days of work to windward towards Lunenburg, Nova
Scotia. We had a great visit here in St.Peters and the Yacht club
hosted a cookout for us. We discovered that Admiral Mac Millan came
through here often. The President of National Geographic lived on
the Lake and Mac had relatives here as well.
We caught
up on the TSSOM is closing in on the end of their trip. It was great
that they have included us on their web page. We are still listening
at the evening HF schedule but are pretty sure that we are not
getting out. Best, John

I bet
someone recognizes this bunch!
