Cobh, Ireland to Portland, Maine

Tuesday,  20 June  Day 55  Daily Log   Voyage #  0806

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Yesterday late afternoon and early this morning

It certainly has been busy around here as we near the end of our full at Sea days. Yesterday saw Medical,  confined space extraction with "helo" evacuation taking place.  A giant BILGE BLAST in the engine room which has become a yearly occurrence.  Graduation for the Ship Security Officer / Company Security Officer students, culminated by a ship wide Security Exercise which tested all of our procedures, both on and off the ship.  Room and personnel inspection in preparation for Portland will be followed by the Port Brief tonight.  Even Dining Services had a Training Cruise 2006 presentation last night.  Busy, busy, busy!

So along with that we realized this morning that we were not getting any e-mails.  The Nantucket Northbound Traffic lane course put the Satellite directly behind our mast blocking all the signal.  Consequently we are back on the AOR East bird which is over the Equator but way back at Longitude 18W.  (means low on the horizon for us) Never a dull moment.  AND the question every 5 minutes is "when will we have cell phone communications", answered by when we get close enough to a tower...like MAYBE this afternoon.

Portland tomorrow...I am sure everyone will be glad to be home and I am also sure it will be a very hectic few days for us as we wind down from a great training cruise.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

Flat Stanley and Flat Stella

Portland Info:

BERTH:  Maine State Pier, East Side

Plan for tomorrow's arrival is:

0500 Transfer tow

0700 Board Pilot

0800 Tugs

0900 berthed, Customs and Border Protection officers aboard.

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.

UPDATE

6/20/06 7:00 AM

We are at anchor this morning in a serene harbor on the Bras'dor called Big Harbour Centre. A very untouched paradise which we enjoyed after a long beat to windward to get here. It is foggy this morning and we will be getting underway for St.Peter's canal after breakfast.

We will stay there for the day getting fuel, water fresh produce and access to the internet (ah,civilization!).The winds have been all from the South and we are looking for a shift on Wednesday to start our trip south.

We have not been hearing the ship for the last two call ins and will keep listening.

Best, John
