Cobh, Ireland to Portland, Maine

Monday,  19 June  Day 54  Daily Log   Voyage #  0806

CAPTAIN'S LOG

We had an interesting Father's Day as you can see from the photos below.

TSSOM waits in the distance

Shortly after noon we came upon a foundering sail boat and stopped to investigate if people were aboard and needed help.  When none were found we contacted the Coast Guard and were told that the people had been removed and a notice of the derelict hulk was being broadcast.

After some housekeeping chores it was decided to tow the hulk to Portland.  Some rigging had to be done to get the rudder centered and then we passed a mooring line to tow with.  Soon we were underway with the vessel in tow, headed for Portland Maine.

Today the weather is not so good so we will have to see tomorrow how our ETA will be affected.  Hopefully not at all!  We do expect the weather to moderate and then be in the shelter of Cape Cod tomorrow.

Other than that bit of excitement, and the foredeck getting painted yesterday, things are quite normal here.  I have seen more people wearing cell phones but I don't expect sheer numbers will make much difference in reception until we get a whole lot closer to land.

Portland Info:

BERTH:  Maine State Pier, East Side

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.

UPDATE

6/17/06 6:20AM Saturday morning update.

We are beating in beautiful weather towards the entrance to the Great Bras dor Lakes and are abeam of the highlands of Cape Breton. Quite a sight. All is well and the Bowdoin is starting the passage back towards Castine. Many nice port calls left, though. Had a few great sail romps in the night, achieving 8-9KT speeds consistently. Best,John

Hi Tina,

6/18/06 12:02PM Sunday

We arrived Beddeck harbor Saturday night and all are enjoying the Bras'dor Lakes and Cape Breton. We had a great beat up the Lake and sailed past Alexander Graham Bell's house with quite a bone in our teeth. All are enjoying Sunday ashore ...showers, hikes and maintenance. Underway tomorrow for some cruising in the southern end of the Lake. Best,John

Hi Tina,

6/19/06 6:03 AM Monday

We are getting underway from Beddeck at 0930 and will be cruising the Bras'dor Lake today and doing navigation and sail training exercises. We had a nice visit in the very Scottish town.

Please tell Capt.Wade that I could hear them clearly on 4 and 6 meg, but they were not able to receive me. I will continue to listen. Best,John
