Cobh, Ireland to Portland, Maine

Sunday,  18 June  Day 53  Daily Log   Voyage #  0806

CAPTAIN'S LOG

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

We are approaching our last week of Training Cruise 2006. A week from tomorrow it will be history.  Our time away is divided into segments of relatively routine normally uneventful motoring along enjoying the ever changing sea, traffic and peacefulness of this way of life.  It is interspersed with segments of intense activity in and around our port calls. For us, the next week will be one of those intense periods.  Everyone is anxious to see family and friends and at the same time the level of activity with our Portland visit will mean lots of hard work and hours of prep work before welcoming our family, friends and alumni aboard.

I think everyone is up to the task and well versed in what is necessary considering that from 16 May till 10 June we visited 4 ports, twice transited the Straits of Gibraltar and English Channel, motored in the restricted waters of the Baltic and Kiel canal and dealt with some minor ship casualties.  Learning experience...you bet!

The difference in skill levels and situational awareness between leaving Castine and arriving Portland is immense and increases daily.  The cohesiveness of the entire shipboard population makes goals easy to achieve and satisfying to accomplish.

Many new friends have been made and they will remember us as we remember them.  I had an interesting e-mail this morning from our friends in Gdynia.  Their entire Soccer team, and our friends there, sent congratulations on the "heroic" attitude of the U.S. Soccer team in the World Cup first round match against Italy yesterday.  Less than 3 weeks ago were were playing them in a match in Gdynia...they remembered and so do we!

We look forward to showing our pride in our ship and Academy as we prepare for our Portland Visit.  Wednesday morning is fast approaching.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

Flat Stanley and Flat Stella

The "FLAT" story:    TODAY Stella and Stanley are joining the students in the "chow line" where they will learn how much Pizza is actually consumed on board....and come to think about it. Ice Cream too!  A couple of months with us and they may not be quite so "flat".

Portland Info:

BERTH:  Maine State Pier, East Side

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
