| CAPTAIN'S LOG
I have lined up a series of GUEST EDITORS
which will grace this space on some of our remaining days. A
mix of Faculty, staff and students to give you a bit of a different
perspective of Training Cruise 2006. We start today with a view from
the eyes of a 4/C Cadet.
4/C Cruise Perspective
As the T/S S.O.M sails closer to home, reflecting back
on cruise it seems almost unreal how fast it has gone by. It seems
almost yesterday, feeling the ship start to move under our feet, and
the excited feeling of what awaited us across the sea. If there’s
one thing that I’ve learned from being out at sea is that, I could
definitely see myself shipping out for a living, and also cruise
made me realize that even though being out at sea is hard, it’s even
harder for loved ones at home who miss you.
I can definitely say that the good times on cruise weigh
out the bad one-hundred to one. Not too many young adults can say
they have sailed through the straits of Gibraltar, through the
Mediterranean Ocean, and through the Kiel Canal before they are a
sophomore in College. That is really something. When I go home,
after cruise, has finished, I will be looking forward to seeing the
look on my mothers face when I give her the gifts I bought her in
the three ports. That will mean a lot to me.
When I go home I will definitely be looking forward to
doing the things I don’t have time for anymore, like surf fishing at
the beach next to my house, sleeping in my own bed, and going for
long car rides in the country side. As cruise comes to a close, and
the freshman year for me, I begin to think of all the things I’ve
learned this year, and how much I changed as a person.
Most importantly I learned that things change, and people
change constantly. No matter how much you want things to stay the
same they don’t. It’s just a part of life. My Midshipmen Training
Officers always said when I went home after MUG Month was, over, I
wouldn’t fit in with my friends because I would be different, and
you know something, they where right. But, if there’s one thing I’m
sure of its for the better.

Portland Info:
BERTH: Maine State Pier,
East Side
Portland/Castine
Excursion:
Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our
home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".
The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons
on board above our vessels certification. To do this we have
to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.
Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited. We,
of necessity, have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper
class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus
official MMA invitees and crew member guests. We can not offer
more because we do not have the lifesaving capability. Also
this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather,
security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the
last moment. The security issue is becoming a big item in how
we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning
to attend please be patient with the necessary
procedures. |

UPDATE
Weekend
update. 6/11/06
We had
a great 24 hour sail from Port Hakesbury, through the Northumberland
strait to Summerside Prince Edward Island. Arrived under full sail
and cannon fire to a nice crowd on the dock. Crew have been enjoying
time ashore and meeting the very warm people of this island.
Monday
we will be received by the Holland Marine College and the Mayor for
a tour and reception. The weather has been wet and windy, but does
not distract from the beauty of this part of Canada. We expect to be
underway for the Isle de Madeline,160 nm, early Tuesday. The weather
is supposed to improve in the coming days. We have been doing tours
and open house for the locals and have met some interesting folks.
