Cobh, Ireland to Portland, Maine

Sunday,  11 June  Day 46  Daily Log   Voyage #  0806

CAPTAIN'S LOG

We start our clock changes back to Eastern Daylight Savings time tonight.  Basically we will move them back 1 hour every other day until we are synchronized with the East Coast.

Bit bouncy the past day and we ended up steering South...I heard a few comments about a Lisbon port call but don't think we could afford that; either in time nor money.  It surprises me that anyone has Euros left as shopping at Christy's on the dock was wild and furious Friday afternoon.  We do hope that the weather will cooperate for planned maintenance on the way home.

Tests are being given, Engineering is hot on doing the Engine Flashlight exam.  STCW assessment books are seen everywhere.  The food continues to be too good.  9 days and a wakeup for Portland...cruise is certainly winding down.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

Portland Info:

BERTH:  Maine State Pier, East Side

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.

UPDATE

Fri 6/9/2006 6:50 AM

Bowdoin got underway from Port Hawkesbury at 0500, had a nice passage through the Canso lock and are now sailing towards St.George Peninsula and on to the North Umberland Strait.

The Gale force winds abated over night and we have 25 kts of SE wind, overcast and showers. We did see the sun briefly, so we are sure it is still there! We were making 9.7 kts for a period this morning.

We are heading up to Summerside, Prince Edward Island and expect to arrive there on Saturday.

The city and Marine College have made a very generous invitation and we are all looking forward to this Port call.

Weather fronts have been fast moving and we are all learning a lot about weather routing.

Best, John
