at Cobh Ireland

Wednesday,  7 June  Day 42  Daily Log   Voyage #  0706

CAPTAIN'S LOG

We are alongside.  Surprise, we came in last night to avoid any possible fog delays which was an issue yesterday.  However we awoke this morning to clear and sunny.  It's nice to not have to move this morning and all went well last night.  TRAINING it is...in the real world you are always dealing with unexpected movements and you better be ready!

Berthing last night...Cobh was beautiful.

Reveille this morning at 0615, immediately followed by a whistle from the train station agent and the first train of the day to Cork pulled out of the station.  I think I counted 22 trains leaving Cobh on Monday through Saturday. The last returning train departs Cork at 2230 and arrives back here in Cobh at 2254, a 24 minute ride.

We look forward to a lot of trips to Blarney Castle, Cork and of course the history of Cobh, which was once called "Queenstown", the last port of the Titanic.  Just 17 miles South of here is where the Lusitanian was torpedoed and the graveyard here has many headstones and monuments to those lost in this tragedy.

PHOTO's

The lighthouse and ruins at the entrance to the River Cork

This little guy adopted us when we arrived at anchor and spent the day wandering in and out of the wheelhouse.  Banded on both legs and not a bit afraid of people.  Panhandling paid off for him as he was treated to seeds, bread and lots of interest.

These new condos have history in their back yard!

Early morning photos this morning.

ISPS (International Ship & Port Security) is much more visible this year.

The 0615 commuter to Cork.

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
