| CAPTAIN'S LOG
Well, of course, sitting a mile off
Ireland at anchor has evoked some emotions from crew and
students...."I sure would like to be over there!" seems to be the
general feeling. Understandably so. This has
always been a problem on all ships that have to sit somewhere
waiting for a berth or simply waiting for orders. Loading,
discharging or steaming along at sea is not an issue, but stop the
ship with no mission and everyone gets antsy.
Tomorrow morning we will be berthed at the
Cork, Cobh Cruise Ship Terminal, our last foreign port call of
Training Cruise 2006. Next stop will be Portland Maine.
Oh, one thing to look for....a bit of weather is predicted for about
the same time we will be leaving Cobh on Saturday, so the past 3
weeks of calm and COMPLACENCY may find some general malaise and
turmoil and certainly will reveal any loose gear. May curtail
our painting plans also.
Last night was the room and personnel
inspection and it was a step above the previous. All focus is
on the big one before Portland as they know "Mom" will be here to
see how they are doing. Maybe a gift or two will smooth the
waters. There is a Waterford Crystal factory in the area and also
the Blarney Woolen Mill shopping complex outside of Cork. For
the last minute shopper trying to get rid of Euros there are even
shops beside the ship in the Heritage Center.
Tonight is the "mandatory" port brief
before port tomorrow. A wealth of information is available
from our trip here 4 years ago. We were here on the 1st
through 3rd of June 2002. For the next few days the weather
should warm with a flow of air from the Continent so we are looking
forward to some "Fish & Chips" and I have heard mention of "Guinness
& Murphy's". Word of caution is that there is a difference in
size between a U.S. Pint and a British Pint with the British being
the larger.....maybe a "cuppa" would be safer!
