Kiel Canal to Cobh Ireland

Sunday,  4 June  Day 38  Daily Log   Voyage #  0706

CAPTAIN'S LOG

We have been blessed by being able to add a bit of  International Flavor to Training Cruise this year. We have with us two students from China who are Engineering Students at Dalian Maritime University.  They have been at MMA since January, having spent the Spring Semester taking Engineering classes and now are with us on training cruise.  From Barcelona to Gdynia we also had with us two Navigation students from Poland who study at Gdynia Maritime University. They had to disaembark last week to take their exams before going to sea for a year as cadets and then returning for their final year of study. The GMU program like most other European Maritime Schools takes 5 years.  3 Years of study, a year at sea as cadet and then the final year of study before graduating.

Today is HOLIDAY ROUTINE again.  The third of four scheduled for this year.  Because of our training regimen and rotations of companies we do not observe Sundays as days off.  Instead we arrange it so each company has watch during the Holiday Routine days.  That gives them 3 days of Holiday and 1 day they work (watch).

We will exit the English Channel later today and head up towards the River Cork.  We will evaluate the weather, traffic and the opportunity to maybe go to anchor until our planned transit to Cobh on Wednesday morning.

We have begun our transition back to Eastern Daylight Savings time by moving the clocks back 1 hour last night.  When you combine this with reveille being an hour later this morning because of the Holiday, we all got 2 hours of extra sleep....or we could have if we were not creatures of habit awakening at 0400 every morning.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

PHOTO's

The Baltic countries seem to be the leaders in using the wind for generating power.  We have seen literally thousands of wind turbines, both on shore and offshore.  They look like tree farms at sea all lined up in neat rows.  They are in rural and village settings, industrial and agricultural areas.  The livestock, swans, ducks and people all seem to be in harmony with harnessing the free wind to make electricity.

Some of these are truly giant in size.

Co-existing with homes and wildlife

Momma Swan with one hatchling and three eggs still on the nest

Swans are everywhere, not the least worried about the ship's transiting

Villages and homes, all neat as a pin!

Portland Info:

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
