Barcelona to Gibraltar

Friday, 19 May     Day 22  Daily Log   Voyage #  0406

CAPTAIN'S LOG

"Futbol Club Barcelona"

Euro Cup 2006

Yesterday at supper time Barcelona CELEBRATED the return from Paris of Team Barcelona.  It started with a Helicopter ride to the Port Breakwater, transferring to a Catamaran and boat parade to the historic steps in front of the Colon statue and then a giant parade through the city.  Mobs of people, lots of noise, music, cheering, and of course paraphernalia galore. The team was dressed in business suits and very much loving the attention.  All in all a great display of the warmth of the citizens of Barcelona.

The team returns to a tumultuous welcome!

We departed Barcelona on time and are now headed for Gibraltar for fuel.  It will be nice to get some more weight in the ship before we poke our bow out beyond the Straits.  Currently it's a bit windy with a 12 foot sea running.  Further along up by Biscay there is some even bigger seas.  Hopefully our Gibraltar stay will allow things to settle down a bit for our transit up to the English Channel.

From the stories circulating, everyone enjoyed Barcelona immensely.  Bit quiet about today and decisions are being made to keep the students busy and don't let them sit in the classroom....that would surely be non-productive!

I bet it will be a ghost ship after 1600 tonight!

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has granted us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
