At Barcelona

Wednesday, 17 May     Day 20  Daily Log   Voyage #  0306

CAPTAIN'S LOG

The most famous monument in all of Barcelona is the statue of Columbus pointing to the New World.

The monument is situated right on the waterfront at the old port.  To the right (North) is the new Olympic Village area and to the left is the new port area.  There are now in Phase 2 of 5 phases to add another 1200 meters to the breakwater, dredge and reclaim more land to handle the increasing number of ships calling at Barcelona.  The traffic in and out daily is well over 150 vessels.  Also to the right is a huge modern shopping  mall right on the water and also a huge I-Max theatre with a 27 Meter high screen, supposed to be the largest in the world.

More famous is La Rambla, which is a huge avenue stretching from the Colon monument up the hill to Catalunya square.  Very wide, street lined with shops, restaurants and historic buildings.  A wide central park with grass and trees is in the middle of the street.

SO, lots to see and do.  From what I heard a great time was had by all.  Only complaint seems to be pricing.  Exchange rate Dollars to Euros is about $1.35.  Last time we were in Europe it was about par with the Dollar and four years ago it was lower than the dollar.  This is one reason oil prices are up.  OPEC nations sell oil in dollars.  The dollar is not worth as much so even pumping more oil they are making less money.  By the way, the Doctor asked someone to convert their liters per euro price of gas to dollars per gallon and was told about $7.00 per gallon.  Lots of very small cars and motor scooters here in the city!

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
