Barcelona to Barcelona

Monday, 15 May     Day 18  Daily Log   Voyage #  0306

CAPTAIN'S LOG

We arrived off Barcelona last night after completing a full speed transit from Castine.  We accumulated lots of engine performance data from this run and will use it in planning engine overhauls, upgrades and operational parameters.

Our speed for the transit was a respectable 16.4 knots but we did not reach operational horsepower at any point in the transit. Key to the statistics was the deviation in the temperature of the main engine cylinders, which was very low. 22 ° F Maximum between all 6 cylinders. That is good and what you want to see.

Room and personnel inspections went well last night and my daily walk about of the ship is showing the pride and care she is getting from the embarked cadets this year.  Despite the hard use, they are doing a good job of policing after themselves and they are becoming quite expert at cleaning, waxing, doing laundry, ironing, sewing and all the wondrous little things that "MOM" normally did for them.  This is not to say that they will admit to it when they get home....I think they like the attention from the home overseers who tend to "spoil" them.

Our short 34 hour or so offshore cruise to the Balearic Isles will take us back to the Barcelona pilot station about 0700 in the morning.  We have been assigned a berth at the World Trade Center right down town in front of the statue of Columbus pointing to the "New World".  Life is good for STATE OF MAINE.

We fly the "Steaming Ensign" each day at sea from sunrise to sunset.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
