Castine to Barcelona

Sunday, 14 May     Day 17  Daily Log   Voyage #  0206

CAPTAIN'S LOG

 Happy Mothers Day

We are currently heading up the coast of Spain towards our destination at Barcelona.  We have maintained our engine speed at full ahead (100 % propeller pitch) since departing Penobscot Bay back on the 5th of May.  Our voyage speed should be almost 16.5 knots and the Engine has been very happy going along at about 80% of maximum continuous rating  (MCR).  Horsepower has been about 6400 or so most of the time.  Our propeller is undersized for the engine so we are not able to get any higher horsepower.  Tonight when we arrive we will go offshore at a much slower speed and use the remaining time for training before entering port on Tuesday morning.

Inspections, port briefs, wash downs, shine the brass and a raft of myriad little details need to be taken care of before entering port so it will be a busy last couple of days.

The Spanish coast with it prominent outcropping land points equipped with lighthouses, offers some great terrestrial navigation opportunities.  The large amount of coastal traffic makes for interesting watches and there are always the unique ships that pop up for us to discuss.  Some of the students are just now getting to stand their first watches as their Company Rotation finally gets them on the Watch Bill.

Last leg of the voyage...our destination lies ahead!

PHOTO's

"Handysize" Tanker (very modern).  Heavy lift ship carrying an oil production unit.  (These ships sink by taking on ballast.  They then float what they carry over the ship.  Next they pump out the ballast and raise the ship and cargo up to transit draft.)

Interesting night time Bridge photo, the night we left.

2/C & 4/C Deck training.  Spanish coast in the background.

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Portland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
