Castine to Barcelona

Tuesday, 09 May     Day 12   Daily Log   Voyage #  0106

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Last year we took some "bottle letters" to sea with us and deployed them at various times during cruise.  Because of the prohibition of dumping plastics in the sea, they were necessarily glass, which makes them somewhat susceptible to breakage.  That not withstanding I was thrilled to receive the below correspondence this morning.  For your information the "Adams School" is the local K-8 school in Castine.

Hi Larry:

I got a phone call yesterday from a woman in Kensington, Maryland.
She was vacationing in Nassau, Bahamas and found one of the Adams School bottles on the beach--intact. It had messages from our fourth graders. And it was a bottle that we sent on the TS
STATE OF MAINE last year! Their e-mail message below. It even came with photos of the beach.

Dear Bottle-senders ˇV Meredith, Paul, Alex W., J.C. and Jasper,

Our names are Cecelia and Jim  and we found your bottle floating near Nassau, New Providence Island in the Bahamas while we were on vacation. We had rented a jet-ski and while we were riding near Cable Beach, we saw your bottle and pulled it from the water. When we got back to our hotel room we broke open the bottle very carefully and were very excited to see your letters all the way from Maine!!!

We have enclosed some pictures from our trip including the neck of the bottle - the picture is a little fuzzy but if you look closely, you can see where a few small clams have attached themselves.

When we were in the Bahamas we ate Conch which is a native food and in fact is a big snail. Not Cecelia's favorite food.  It's good but lobster is better!!!! The weather was absolutely beautiful and the water is clear and reflects the blue of the sky.

As for us, we live in Kensington, Maryland which is a little north of Washington, DC. We have 3 dogs and their names are Max, Mox and Missy. They are all "mutts¨ from rescue leagues. We also have an African Grey Parrot named Charlie who barks like a dog and laughs like a person.

Could you please tell us how far your bottle traveled in the year it was in the Atlantic Ocean? Where exactly was the bottle put into the
water?? Just think of all the things your bottle went through.
Your bottle even had to make its way over a reef that surrounds Cable Beach. It could have gone all the way down the East Coast, just to break on the reef with the island in sight, but thank goodness it made it!!!

We hope you are as excited about your bottle being found as we were in finding it!!! We hope to hear from you soon!!!

Finding your bottle was the best surprise of our vacation!!!!

Your Friends,
Cecelia and Jim
Kensington, Maryland

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
