Castine to Barcelona

Monday, 08 May     Day 11   Daily Log   Voyage #  0106

CAPTAIN'S LOG

We will advance the clocks again tonight and that will put us on Zone Time of -2 hours.  That will mean we will be 2 hours ahead of East Coast U.S. time. Bear that in mind when you communicate with anyone aboard.  Also  another communication note to keep in mind.  We are not hooked up to the Internet all the time.  We only hook up a few times a day to send and receive e-mails and to send the web page for posting.  That means no instant response, so bear in mind that communications with us could entail lag time.

The weather is kicking up a bit....There is a pretty large low North of the Azores and it is merging with an upper level low so I suspect it will be around for a while and the seas will build the longer it blows.  Fortunately it is from the North, right now NNE but should come around more to the NW.  Should put the seas back on the quarter but I don't expect any improvement till we get past the Azores in about 72 hours.  Should force us all to SECURE our rooms or we will suffer the consequence of gear on the deck during the night!   Chairs with rollers DO NOT fair well either and they will be tied down and we will switch to No Roller chairs.

We have been falling in and out of the Gulf Stream all morning.  Water temperatures have been from 54 to 67 and speed from 16 to 18.5 knots.

Meanwhile we hear the East Coast weather is grand and Europe is still a bit chilly but getting better all the time.  World Cup starts June 1st so we will have to catch the FEVER and get engaged.  It is truly amazing how dominating this sport is, especially in the countries we will be visiting.  The Spanish and Irish are avid fans when it comes to their teams.

SO...just what are the consequences when a water line is twisted off in the Watch Mess just before lunch time?

A REAL mess, a muster of engineers and a lunch without water...no juice, no coffee, no soda,  JUST milk.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
