CAPTAIN'S LOG The experts are here......The progress they are making is encouraging. The black screens are no longer..... We have arranged sailing from Castine for 0500 in the morning which should allow for completion of testing and insuring all is satisfactory before we sail from the dock. (The Chief Engineer will not sail unless he is satisfied it is working and I have complete confidence in his judgment). MEANWHILE: Training is taking place for the second day in a row. We are now at Training day 3. Each day is done 4 times for the 4 companies of students. To summarize, each company of students gets about 10 days of Training, 10 of Watches, 10 of Maintenance and 10 of Utility, making 40 days. Additionally we are in port 20 days and each of the companies rotates every day, making 5 port days in each slot. CONFUSED YET? Making the Bridge Wings look "spiffy" GMDSS Operations to send weather reports (GMDSS = Global Marine Distress & Safety System) Castine harbor this morning just before sunrise. Absolutely beautiful! Cleaning is always a big issue for us. Our new program this year for upper-class students is Vessel and Company Security Officer training which will lead to a MARAD / Coast Guard federally approved certificate of completion. We have aboard an instructor from M-PACT specifically tasked with the training and using the ship as a Lab.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification. To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board. Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited. We, of necessity, have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests. We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability. Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment. The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
