At Castine Maine

Wednesday, 03 May     Day 6   Daily Log   Voyage #  0106

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Now Hear This.....Remove gangway, cast off all lines, get underway...  NOT

Despite our fondest wish to sail from Castine this morning we were fooled by the automation gremlins in the engine room.  Last night there were some funky readings on the monitors in the Engine Operating Station and despite attempts to reboot the system and troubleshoot, the Engineer's wound up with the "black screens of death" on all the monitors.

"Black Screen of Death"

This morning there are consultations going on with the "experts" and we are endeavoring to get the technicians to Castine to work their magic.  Hopefully the delay will not exceed one or two days.

Fortunately we have a couple of days of extra time built into our schedule so even if we sail on Friday we will still make our first port on schedule.

Granted it is a big disappointment, especially for the crew who have worked so hard to recover from our Katrina Relief deployment and get everything ready to make this Cruise.  Last minute delays are never fun and the only consolation is that it is practice for the real world of shipping where just such delays, though not common place, really do occur.  It is something that seaman have dealt with throughout the ages and I suspect will continue to do so.  It brings to mind the NASA Space Shuttle delays.......

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
