At Castine Maine

Monday, 01 May     Day 4   Daily Log   Voyage #  0106

CAPTAIN'S LOG

DRILLS are the order of the day today as they have been every day since Friday. We start out with familiarization and "walk throughs" so everyone is familiar with where they need to go when the signal is sounded.  This progresses to gear issuing and responding with more and more gear to handle the emergency at each successive drill. This will lead us to the Official Drill conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard as part of our inspections to renew our Certificate of Inspection.  That Official Drill is unannounced and we have no idea of what type of Emergency the USCG will deem to have us perform for them.....SO, it can be very interesting.  There has certainly been a marked improvement in procedures and accountability in the past couple of days as everyone gets more familiar with the tried and true steps necessary to be successful.

The other big issue today is Security and as such everyone sailing with us MUST have Security awareness and Force Protection training along with the Security training mandated by the Vessel's Security Plan.  This training is essential in the world today and is ongoing before and during each port visit.

New to Cruise this year is a specific Vessel / Company Security Officer Training Course which is being offered to the Upper Class students.  It is professionally taught by members of M-PACT and MMA personnel and will result in a Certificate of completion which satisfies the criteria of USCG and the Maritime Administration.  M-PACT is partnered with MMA for various Security courses specific to First Responders, Marine Personnel, Security Personnel and Local, County and State level personnel.

Portland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
