| CAPTAIN'S LOG
Details,
Details, Details...isn't that always the way? Getting ready to
sail from Castine presents us with a myriad of just such "details"
that need to be dealt with prior to sailing. We have a few
ongoing industrial assistance items still being worked by outside
contractors as well as dealing with IT and communications issues,
Security verifications, Fire and Emergency Drills, verification of
Muster Sheets and, of course, simply Training. Consequently it
has been VERY busy today after yesterday being devoted to
graduation! Tomorrow being a working Monday, should step up
the madhouse level a notch or two....
One thing
hasn't changed from previous years and that is the desire of the
students to tackle the tasks head on and their insatiable desire to
learn. Oh, how we wish there was a "seamanship pill", but then
we would miss out on the gratification of transferring our skills
and knowledge to the new generation.
Whether, Deck,
Engine, Crew, Staff, Faculty, or Student we who sail are always
learning a new trick or experiencing a life skill which will serve
us well some day. I sailed with an old Captain who had served
as AB on the Sailing Ship "Flying Cloud" which once belonged to the
heiress of the Post cereal fortune. Her husband was U.S.
Ambassador to Russia and the vessel was the largest privately owned
sailing ship in the world with a crew of almost a hundred. His
seamanship lessons I still remember today. Hopefully our
students will have just such memories later in their careers.

This is the way out.......where we will be heading
Wednesday morning!

Dock work and Plumbing (snaking out drains)

Neat stowage of gear left behind is important.
Also prep work on the Bridge Wings.

Medical Inventory and gear stowing. Lighting
is a continuous issue.

Distributing "PFD'S" (Lifejackets) and Galley Prep
work.
Pizza is a staple on our chow line

Did they know their picture was being taken?
Is this "hard at work" photo, posed?

Excursion:
Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our
home berth has been designated as a possible "excursion day".
The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons
on board above our vessels certification. To do this we have
to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.
Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited. We,
of necessity, have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper
class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus
official MMA invitees and crew member guests. We can not offer
more because we do not have the lifesaving capability. Also
this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather,
security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the
last moment. The security issue is becoming a big item in how
we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning
to attend please be patient with the necessary
procedures.
